He is due his eternal rest, in my opinion. He gave us more than we could pay attention to, but dared us to try.
I had the good fortune to have him sign a copy of one of his paperbacks, at Borders Books, back in ther '90's. I offered a trite quip and he responded. I hope he appreciated it at all.
I had the good fortune to make sure to see "Leopoldstadt" in Manhattan a few years ago. It was charming, and moving.
I did not have to good fortune to allow him to sign my face after the performance. I assume he took the night off.
Had I known, I might have waited.
