Good evening, writers! I hope you’re doing well. We had snow here and our first real cold weather. I am curled up under a cozy blanket. I’m not really sure what to write about, but it has put me in mind of both the season, meaning the holidays, and the snow.
A brief digression. Noveling month has come and gone once again. Did you do anything special for it? If so, please let us know in the comments. I didn’t do much. As I have mentioned, my local writing group has replaced the Old Thing with their own New Thing, and it means being able to set your own goal whatever it may be. Some people still try to do the classic 50k words. I knew I didn’t have that in me this year, and I was undecided between 20k or 25k. I foolishly opted for the larger number. What was I thinking?
I managed to write nearly twelve thousand words and on the last day of the month some of the leadership of my group encouraged me to alter my goal, even though the month was nearly over. Well, my goal became 10k words and, I guess you could say I hit it? Can you?
It’s a bit of a case of shoot first and whatever you hit, call it the target, but I guess I’m okay with it.
All right, back to tonight’s diary. What I am thinking of for a challenge is either to write about the holidays, either the ones just past or the ones still upcoming, or to write a scene that is heavily affected by the weather. Of course, you can do both, if you like, and it doesn’t have to be winter holidays or weather if they don’t suit your characters and setting.
Apologies for such a scanty diary this time, but, as I said, I wasn’t really sure what to write about.
Tonight’s Challenge:
Write a scene using your own characters and setting or some of our stock characters. Show us how the holidays and/or the weather are affecting them and the events taking place. Try to invoke as many of the senses as you can.
If you did anything special for November, or if you would like to begin planning a writing project for January, tell us about it in the comments.
Write On! will be a regular Thursday night diary (8 pm Eastern, 5 pm Pacific) until it isn’t.
