Ethiopia's death toll From Marburg virus is rising. The virus, in the same family as Ebola, circulates in fruit bats, occasionally jumping to humans and sparking an outbreak. There is no vaccine or treatment.

A third infant death from pertussis In Kentucky comes as cases are high for the second year in a row. The national total this year is over 25,000, which is believed to be an undercount. Many cases go unrecognized or unreported, according to the CDC.

Experts are now warning that the H5N1 bird flu Is mutating rapidly, splitting into multiple strains, and infecting mammal species at an unprecedented scale. This makes preparation for any potential pandemic harder because we don't know what the strain will look like that makes the breakthrough.

And viable virus has been Isolated from soft-bodied ticks feeding on infected gulls. It is not yet clear if ticks could be a vector or if this is a dead-end host for the virus. But ticks are good at spreading lots of other things...
