Dementia Don has been rude to reporters for a long time. It has gotten worse; much more insulting, and very personal. Lashing out is a symptom of dementia. However, even though his dementia is progressing, he should not be allowed to treat reporters in such a demeaning manner. It’s going to take one reporter to stand up to him for the press briefings to change. One reporter needs to be the sacrificial lamb. That reporter will most likely lose her job (I say her on purpose as his target is usually female). She will be able to get another job in alternative media easily—podcasting, YouTube—there are plenty of options. I’m sure MeidasTouch or Pod Save America would make her an offer. Someone has to be brave to end this. It will go on and become the norm if not addressed. The only way to defeat a bully is to take on that bully.
Senator McCarthy continued to destroy lives with his bullying tactics until one person stood up to him live on television. Joseph Welch, the U.S. Army's chief counsel, famously asked Senator Joseph McCarthy, "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" during the televised Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954. Who will go down in history and be the next Joseph Welch?
