Not that we have a good chance to get them passed but we clearly need some new Constitutional Amendments to prevent the current situation from happening again.
What should they be? What should we try for?
To get the ball rolling, here’s what’s been rattling around my brain.
1. Right to vote. Every adult shall have an equal vote and any law restricting voting shall be subject to strict scrutiny. (“Equal vote” is to ban gerrymanders).
2. The President shall have no powers or immunities except those in the text of the Constitution.
3. An officer of the United States may be removed from office by a simple majority if first convicted of a felony.
4. Whereas Article III requires good behavior, no court shall have power to decide an issue unless it has a binding code of ethics.
5. Whereas a truly free press requires variety and competition, antitrust laws shall be construed as liberally as possible against media concentrations.
6. The equal protection of the law is guaranteed to all regardless of any immutable characteristics (religion is already covered elsewhere).
7. Any official body, local, state, or Federal, shall have power to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
I’d like to fix the 25th, too, but everything I’ve thought of so far would risk making things worse.
What are everyone else’s ideas?
