Happy Friday! For those that missed it yesterday, my chronic wound healed up finally, no more bi-weekly wound care appointments for me. That makes it less likely that I’ll have 2 or 3 appointments in the same week, so hooray. It’s also at least two less trips to the city every month, which will be a lot easier on me.
Today though, I’m mostly resting. It’s been a long week with not as much sleep as I should have. Bit has been *really* busy at work this month too. If I do too much too many days in a row I will have more pain, exhaustion, focus issues and seizures. So after three busy days, I have to take a rest day so I can be out and about and doing things again.
An OT concept I’ve been utilizing lately is the Brain Break. In OT a Brain Break is usually a movement break done in schools to help kids self-regulate and focus better on their lessons. It gives the brain a break from heavy mental work, lets kids play, have fun, and expend some energy so they can return to the serious task of learning with a fresh mind.
Adults can take brain breaks as well. Some people take a walk, or go outside and garden, or do a myriad of other things to help us relax and be able to focus better on important matters afterward. Those of us who can’t do a lot of the physically active tasks we used to do, can also take brain breaks that just include watching something fun, doing seated exercises, listening to music, reading, anything to get your brain off the big world for a moment and enjoy something just to enjoy it.

I’ve had a lot of heavy brain fog and just exhausted days lately, and the news channels haven’t been helping at all. So I’ve been moderating them with some cute videos. One is a woman who buys things like mystery boxes and unboxes them, things I’ve always been curious about but never had the money to buy. She also gets other little cute things. No politics, just window shopping by proxy. She also uncovers scam items so other people don’t buy them. Her name is Hope.
Maggie is another one I watch for similar reasons, she focuses a lot on items that are probably scams. I’ve decided not to try and buy a few things because of her videos, like the pretty glass book mug that I would really love to have, but it’s AI and just looks like blobs of color with white streaks across it. Some things actually turn out ok.
And of course, Refashioned Hippie. This series is particularly fun.
There’s also the “We Rate Dogs” videos, aka the 15/10 Foundation. I bought their wall calendar this year instead of my Welsh Language one which wasn’t available (thanks Trump). I’m thinking of writing in the Welsh though, just so I have the reminder as we go through the year.
When I can, I do some seated exercises, play with the dogs (though I throw a ball most of the day… because Stewie), or on really good days when the weather is just right I’ll do some yard maintenance with the leaf blower or trimmer.
Share your fun things you’ve been doing or watching to take your mind off of <waves at the universe>. What has been YOUR brain break?
