Congressman Gabe Amo won the 2023 September Democratic Primary in an upset, defeating 11 other Democratic candidates vying to succeed David Cicilline in the special election to represent Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District (a majority white district). In the special election, held on November7, 2023, he defeated the Republican candidate 64.73 to 34.98. Congressman Gabe Amo is the first and only Black person to represent Rhode Island in Congress. Congressman Amo, who was born and raised in Pawtucket, RI, is the son of parents from West Africa, his mother from Liberia and his father from Ghana. Rep. Gabe Amo graduated with honors from Wheaton College where he majored in political science. He subsequently received a Marshall Scholarship to study comparative social policy at Merton College, Oxford.
Prior to his election to Congress, Rep. Amo worked in the Obama Administration, as an advisor to Governor Raimondo, as an advisor on Joe Biden’s 2020 election campaign, on Biden’s transition team and in the Biden Administration.
During his tenure, Congressman Gabe Amo has been the primary sponsor of 16 bills, 11 in the 119th Congress. Rep. Amo serves on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and as the Ranking Member of the Environment subcommittee of that Committee. He also serves on the House Committee on the Budget and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and on the East Asia and Pacific and Europe subcommittees of that Committee.
