He drew controversy during his 2018 divorce, during which his former wife Kelley Beaman alleged in trial documents he committed emotional abuse, degradation and infidelity. Beaman denied the allegations in court documents and the dispute was later settled. At the time he left his positions on the boards of Belmont University, Montgomery Bell Academy and the Beacon Center for Tennessee.
Senator Jeff Merkley, of Oregon, said during the hearing he was disturbed by what he read about Beaman's 2018 divorce but declined to ask for details in front of the committee.
"I really hesitate to ask you about them here," Merkley said. "And so, I think I will pursue them separately. But the allegations made during that were disturbing to me, I'll just put it that way."
